Brake Disc Dimensions Explained: Diameter, Thickness, Height & Centre Bore

Brake disc dimensions are one of the most important checks when a vehicle catalogue shows more than one braking option. Two discs can share the same outer diameter and still be completely different parts because the thickness, overall height, centre bore or mounting layout is different.

Brake disc diameter

The outer diameter is the measurement across the full braking disc. It is usually shown in millimetres, for example 280 mm, 312 mm or 340 mm. Diameter affects the position of the braking surface relative to the caliper, so a different diameter is not interchangeable simply because the disc fits over the wheel hub.

Performance versions, larger engines and optional brake packages can use a larger disc than the standard version of the same model. This is one reason a registration or model/year search can return several possibilities.

Brake disc thickness

Thickness is the width of the braking section when the disc is new. Vented discs are normally much thicker than solid rear discs because there is an internal air gap between the two friction faces. The correct thickness is essential for the caliper and pad arrangement.

Listings may also state a minimum thickness. That figure is a service limit for the relevant disc design, not the thickness of a new replacement disc. Follow the vehicle and disc manufacturer's service information when assessing wear.

Overall height

Brake disc height is sometimes overlooked. It measures from the outer face of the mounting bell or hat to the opposite side of the disc profile. The height controls where the braking surface sits in relation to the hub and caliper.

A disc can have the right diameter and bolt holes but still be wrong if the height is different. This is why matching several dimensions is much safer than relying on a single measurement.

Centre bore

The centre bore is the central opening that locates the disc on the hub. It must match the hub design correctly. A visibly similar disc with a different centre bore is not the correct replacement.

Number of holes and bolt pattern

The hole count and pitch-circle layout need to match the vehicle hub. Some discs also have separate retaining-screw holes. Do not assume that every five-hole disc has the same pattern.

Solid vs vented brake discs

A solid disc uses one main section of metal. A vented disc has internal passages between two friction faces to help manage heat. Some vehicles use vented front discs and solid rear discs, while higher-output applications may use vented discs on both axles.

Can I measure my old brake disc?

Measurements can be useful as a cross-check, but an old disc may be worn, corroded or difficult to measure accurately while fitted. A reliable OE number or manufacturer catalogue reference is usually stronger evidence. If measuring, compare several dimensions rather than just diameter.

What if my vehicle has two possible disc sizes?

  1. Select the exact vehicle, engine and year.
  2. Check whether the catalogue gives a chassis, production-date or brake-system note.
  3. Compare the OE number from the original part or reliable vehicle data.
  4. Compare diameter, thickness, height and centre bore.
  5. Confirm front or rear axle.
  6. If uncertainty remains, ask for a fitment check before ordering.

Is a 312 mm brake disc always the same?

No. Different vehicles can use 312 mm discs with different thicknesses, heights, centre bores and mounting layouts.

Are front discs always vented?

No, although vented front discs are common. The correct construction depends on the vehicle and brake package.

Does disc diameter tell me which brake pads I need?
