What does an ABS sensor do?
An ABS sensor, often called a wheel-speed sensor, measures wheel rotation. The vehicle uses this information for systems such as anti-lock braking and, depending on the vehicle, traction and stability control. A sensor is normally positioned near the wheel hub or bearing area and reads a reluctor or magnetic encoder.
What does a brake pad wear sensor do?
A brake pad wear sensor is designed to warn when the friction material has reached a specified wear point. On many vehicles it is a small electrical lead that clips into or attaches to a brake pad. Some vehicles use one sensor on an axle while others use a different arrangement, so the number and fitting position matter.

Common signs of an ABS sensor problem
Possible signs include an ABS warning light, traction-control warning, stability-control warning or a stored wheel-speed fault code. Those symptoms do not prove the sensor itself has failed: wiring, connectors, wheel bearings, magnetic encoder rings and other components can cause similar faults. Diagnosis is important before replacing parts.
Common signs of a brake pad wear sensor issue
A brake wear message can appear when the pads have reached their wear limit, but a damaged or disconnected sensor can also trigger a warning. On designs where the sensor is sacrificial, it may need replacing at the same time as the brake pads after it has contacted the disc.
How to identify the correct sensor
- Confirm the warning and fault. If possible, use diagnostic information rather than relying on the dashboard wording alone.
- Check front or rear. Sensors are usually axle-specific and some ABS sensors are also left/right specific.
- Compare the connector. Plug shape and pin arrangement must match.
- Compare cable length and routing. A visually similar sensor may use a different loom length or mounting clips.
- Check the OE reference. The original part number can greatly reduce ambiguity.
Do all cars have brake pad wear sensors?
No. Some vehicles use electronic wear sensors, some use a mechanical wear indicator and some rely on inspection. Even within one model range, equipment can vary by brake system or production date.
Can an ABS fault affect normal braking?
A vehicle may still have conventional hydraulic braking when an ABS fault is present, but electronic assistance systems may be limited or disabled. Brake and ABS warnings should be investigated promptly. If braking behaviour changes, have the vehicle inspected before continued use.
