Anti Roll Bar Links – Stabiliser, Drop & Sway Bar Link Rods
Anti-roll bar links — also called stabiliser links, drop links, or sway bar links — are critical suspension components that connect the anti-roll bar (stabiliser bar) to the control arm or strut assembly. Their job is to transfer movement between the suspension and the anti-roll bar, helping both sides of the vehicle’s suspension work together for improved balance, reduced body roll, and enhanced cornering stability.
How Anti Roll Bar Links Work
When a vehicle corners, the suspension on one side compresses while the other extends. The anti-roll bar resists this twisting motion, keeping the vehicle flatter through turns. The drop links or stabiliser rods transmit this force from the suspension to the anti-roll bar through ball joints or rubber bushes at each end. This maintains tyre contact with the road surface, improving traction, braking stability, and steering response.
When to Replace Anti Roll Bar Links
Anti-roll bar link rods are subject to continuous movement and load, which causes natural wear over time. Common symptoms of worn or damaged stabiliser links include:
-
Knocking or clunking noise when driving over bumps or uneven roads
-
Excessive body roll when cornering
-
Instability or looseness in steering response
-
Uneven tyre wear
-
Visible play, corrosion, or perished rubber bushes on inspection
It is recommended to inspect and replace stabiliser links every 50,000–70,000 miles or whenever the bushes or joints show wear. Always replace links in pairs (left and right) to maintain even suspension balance.
Construction & Technical Features
Modern anti-roll bar links are typically made from forged steel or aluminium with sealed ball joints for long service life and corrosion resistance. Some designs use polyurethane bushes for improved performance in high-load or motorsport applications. Correct torqueing of the fasteners is critical during installation to avoid premature wear or noise.
