A knock, clunk or rattle from the suspension can be annoying, but the sound alone does not identify a single failed part. Several components can produce similar noises, and the cause may change depending on whether the noise happens over small bumps, during steering, under braking or when the suspension is loaded.

1. Anti-roll bar drop links
Drop links connect the anti-roll bar to the suspension. Their ball joints can develop play, often producing a light knock or rattle over uneven surfaces and repeated small bumps. Because the links move constantly with the suspension, wear can become noticeable before there is an obvious visual failure.

2. Control arms and wishbones
Control arms locate the wheel and connect the hub assembly to the vehicle structure. Depending on the design, an arm can include bushes and a ball joint. Worn bushes can allow unwanted movement, while a worn ball joint may create play or knocking. Steering feel, tyre wear or braking stability can also be affected.

3. Suspension bushes
Rubber or hydraulic bushes isolate vibration while controlling movement. As bushes age they can crack, soften, separate or develop excessive play. A failed bush can cause a dull knock and may allow geometry to move under braking or acceleration.
4. Strut top mounts and bearings
The top mount secures the strut to the body, and many front-strut designs also use a bearing that allows the assembly to turn with the steering. Wear can create knocking, creaking, stiffness or a spring-like twang during steering. A top-mount problem can sound as if it is coming from higher in the wheel arch.
5. Shock absorbers and struts
A worn damper does not always knock, but internal wear, loose mountings or damaged bushes can create noise. Other signs can include poor body control, bouncing, fluid leakage or uneven tyre contact. A damaged spring or spring seat can create a similar sound and should also be checked.
6. Ball joints and track-related components
Suspension ball joints, steering joints and related hardware can develop play. Because the parts are close together, a noise that seems to come from one component can travel through the suspension structure. Checking for play with the vehicle safely supported is more reliable than ordering from the sound alone.
7. Wheel bearings and hub assemblies
Wheel-bearing problems are often associated with humming or rumbling, but excessive play or damage can also create other noises. On some vehicles the hub also contains the magnetic encoder used by the ABS system, so bearing and ABS symptoms can sometimes overlap.

Should suspension arms be replaced in pairs?
It depends on the component, condition of the opposite side and repair guidance. Some parts are commonly replaced in axle pairs, while others may be replaced individually after diagnosis.
Does a suspension repair need wheel alignment?
Many repairs that disturb suspension geometry should be followed by an alignment check. The requirement depends on the component and vehicle.
Can a loose fitting cause a knock?
Yes. Loose or incorrectly torqued fasteners and worn mounting hardware can mimic component failure. Correct installation procedures and torque values matter.
